How to pack for a move

Good packing protects your things and speeds up moving day. Here’s how to do it properly, without buying half a warehouse of materials.

1

Declutter first

Moving fewer things is cheaper and faster. Donate, sell or recycle anything you won’t use in the new place before you pack a single box.

2

Right box, right weight

Heavy items (books, tools) go in small boxes; light, bulky items (duvets, cushions) in large ones. Keep each box under ~15–18 kg.

3

Protect the fragiles

Wrap glassware and crockery individually, stack plates on their edges, and fill every gap so nothing shifts in transit.

4

Label everything

Write the room and contents on the side (not the top) of each box, and mark fragile/this-way-up. It makes unloading and unpacking far quicker.

5

Keep an essentials box

Kettle, mugs, chargers, medication, documents, a change of clothes and toiletries — the box you’ll want the moment you arrive.

Packing — FAQs

What should I pack first when moving?

Pack the things you use least first — books, out-of-season clothes, spare bedding and decorations — up to a month before. Leave everyday essentials until the last day or two.

How heavy should a moving box be?

Keep boxes under about 15–18 kg so they’re safe to lift. Put heavy items like books in small boxes and light, bulky items like bedding in large ones.

How do I protect fragile items when moving?

Wrap each item in bubble wrap or packing paper, pad the box base and gaps with soft items, pack plates vertically like records, and label the box "Fragile — this way up".
